What Is the Canadian National Spelling Bee?

Known informally as CanSpell, the Canadian National Spelling Bee gives regional winners from across the country a trip to Ottawa for the national final. Schools register to take part with the organizing newspaper group, which runs regional bees in cities across Canada — in most regions a school-level bee feeds directly into a written regional round; Calgary is the one exception, running a district-level bee first.

CanSpell deliberately uses the same word lists American spellers study for Scripps — the lists aren't adapted or "Canadianized" — so regional winners and runners-up who go on to Ottawa are also well prepared for a Scripps run, which some do pursue after representing their region.

Who Can Participate?

CanSpell is open to students in Grades 4 through 8, including home-schooled students. Students begin at the school level, with regional winners and runners-up earning the trip to the national bee in Ottawa.

Competition Format

The Canadian National Spelling Bee follows the classic oral spelling elimination format. Each competitor stands before a panel of judges and spells their assigned word aloud, letter by letter. Before spelling, contestants may ask the judges to:

• Repeat the word
• Use the word in a sentence
• Provide its definition
• State its language of origin
• Give its part of speech

One error eliminates the competitor. Rounds increase steadily in difficulty, with the national final drawing on some of the most advanced vocabulary in the English language.

The Word List and What to Study

Words at the Canadian National Spelling Bee are drawn from a wide academic vocabulary spanning science, literature, history, and everyday English. Given Canada's history as a nation shaped by English, French, and Indigenous languages, words with French, Latin, Greek, and Old English origins feature prominently at competitive levels.

A student who understands that many Canadian English words carry silent French consonants or Latinate endings has a clear analytical edge. This kind of structural knowledge allows competitors to reason through unfamiliar words under pressure rather than depending on phonetics or pure memorisation.

How to Prepare Effectively

• Start at least 12 weeks before competition day — spaced repetition needs time to build real memory
• Study word roots, prefixes, and suffixes alongside the words themselves
• Practise spelling aloud every day — silent study does not replicate microphone pressure
• Use a spaced repetition system to review words at scientifically optimal intervals
• Simulate competition conditions — stand, speak clearly, and spell in front of others
• Pay extra attention to French-origin words — essential for Canadian English at elite levels
