What Is the MaRRS Spelling Bee?

The MaRRS International Spelling Bee started in 2003, run by MaRRS Intellectual Services in association with the English and Foreign Language University, Hyderabad. It has grown into one of the largest school competitions in Asia — close to a million students now take part each year, the bulk of them from schools across India, with participation from the UAE and Kuwait as well.

Rather than a single elimination format, MaRRS was built as a structured learning programme with its own training modules, which is why it's often the first serious spelling competition a student encounters. Its first international championship was held in Mumbai in 2007, with later editions held at venues across India and the Gulf.

Who Can Participate?

MaRRS is open to school students roughly spanning Classes 1 through 12, with the competition drawing the large majority of its entrants from schools in India. Students begin at the school level before advancing through district, regional, and national — and, for top performers, international — rounds.

Competition Format

Unlike a conventional spelling bee, MaRRS runs across eleven rounds that test far more than spelling alone — the format is designed to assess vocabulary, grammar, and overall command of the English language, not just letter-by-letter recall. Later elimination stages do include oral spelling rounds in the classic format, where contestants may ask for a word to be:

• Repeated
• Used in a sentence
• Defined
• Given its language of origin
• Identified by part of speech

With close to a million entrants nationally, a student has to outperform an enormous field just to reach the regional stage — making thorough, early preparation essential rather than optional.

The Word List and What to Study

MaRRS Spelling Bee word lists are carefully structured to match the age and grade of each competitor group, increasing progressively in difficulty as rounds advance. At early levels, words are drawn from everyday academic vocabulary. At the national finals, competitors face an advanced lexicon spanning Latin, Greek, French, and Sanskrit-origin English words.

Understanding etymology — the roots, prefixes, and suffixes that build words — is the most powerful preparation strategy at any level. For Indian students in particular, English vocabulary shares deep roots with Sanskrit through the shared Indo-European language family, meaning a student with strong Sanskrit awareness has a natural analytical edge when decoding unfamiliar English words.

How to Prepare Effectively

Given the scale of competition at MaRRS, serious preparation is essential from the very first round. Here is what the top performers do consistently:

• Start at least 12 weeks before competition day — spaced repetition needs time to build real memory
• Study word roots, prefixes, and suffixes alongside the words themselves
• Pay attention to Sanskrit and Latin connections in English — especially powerful for Asian students
• Practise spelling aloud every day — performing at a microphone is a specific skill built through repetition
• Use a spaced repetition system to schedule reviews at scientifically optimal intervals
• Simulate competition conditions — stand, speak clearly, and spell in front of others
