What Is the India Spelling Bee?

The India Spelling Bee (ISB) runs an annual cycle open to students across the country in Classes 1 through 9, held in both online and offline formats. Students mostly enter through their school, though individual registration is available when a school hasn't registered for the cycle. Every registered participant receives an official ISB Guide Book to study from, plus a certificate of participation regardless of how far they advance.

The competition groups students by class band — Class 1 alone, then 2–3, 4–5, 6–7, and 8–9 — so a first-grader never has to spell against a ninth-grader. A student can only enter one ISB contest per academic year, which keeps the competition pool for each class band genuinely matched by level.

Who Can Participate?

Any student in Classes 1 through 9 anywhere in India is eligible. Students compete first at the school level — online or offline, at the school's choice — then advance to online regional rounds if they qualify. National-level format is finalized each cycle in consultation with participating schools.

Because it's exam-based rather than oral, success depends less on composure at a microphone and more on recognizing correct spellings quickly and accurately across every word on the paper — which rewards broad, consistent study over last-minute cramming for a handful of "hard" words.
