1,000 Homophones for Spelling Bee Prep: The Complete List

Homophones — words that sound identical but are spelled differently — are one of the most common ways spellers lose points at a bee. Here's what makes them so tricky, plus a complete reference table of 1,000 homophone pairs with definitions to study from.

Spelling Flashcards Spelling Practice Spelling Games

What Are Homophones?

Homophones are pairs (or occasionally trios) of words that sound identical when spoken aloud but have different spellings and different meanings — "their," "there," and "they're" are the textbook example, but English is full of them, from everyday mix-ups like "flower" and "flour" to competition-level pairs like "cede" and "seed." The word itself comes from the Greek roots "homo-" (same) and "-phone" (sound), describing a mismatch that exists only in speech: read the two words on a page and they're obviously different, but say them out loud and the ear can't tell them apart at all.

Homophones aren't the same thing as homographs (words spelled the same but pronounced differently, like "lead" the metal versus "lead" the verb) or homonyms (a broader term that can mean either). What makes homophones specifically relevant to spelling is that the sound gives a speller zero information about which spelling is correct — unlike most English words, where sounding a word out gets you most of the way to the right letters, a homophone requires knowing the word's meaning first and its spelling second.

Why Homophones Are So Tricky in a Spelling Bee

At a real spelling bee, a word is announced out loud — and for a homophone, that pronunciation is identical no matter which of the two spellings the judge intends. Competitors are allowed to ask for the word's definition, its part of speech, and to hear it used in a sentence, and with a homophone those questions aren't optional extras — they're the only way to figure out which word is actually being asked for. A speller who doesn't ask, or who mishears which definition was given, can spell a perfectly correct word that still counts as wrong, simply because it's the wrong word.

This is also why homophones reward vocabulary study just as much as spelling drills. Knowing that "cereal" is a breakfast grain and "serial" describes something in a sequence doesn't help a student sound either word out — both are pronounced identically — but it's exactly the knowledge that lets them choose the right spelling once the definition is read aloud. Building that word-to-meaning connection ahead of time, rather than trying to work it out live on stage, is what turns homophones from a guessing game into an easy two points.

How to Use This List

The table below lists 1,000 homophone and near-homophone pairs, sorted alphabetically by the first word in each pair, with a short definition for each half so you can see exactly what distinguishes them. Study a batch at a time rather than the whole list at once — cover the definitions, say each word aloud, and try to recall which spelling matches which meaning before checking your answer.
