What Makes 1st Grade Spelling Words Different
First grade spelling introduces short vowel sounds, simple consonant blends, and a student's very first sight words — the building blocks every later grade builds on. Most words are short and fully phonetic, sounding exactly the way they're spelled, but a handful of high-frequency irregular words ("said," "was," "the") show up early anyway because they appear constantly in beginning reading, even though they don't follow standard phonics rules. Learning to recognize which words are "regular" and which are exceptions is the very first spelling skill a student builds, and it's one they'll keep using at every grade level above this one.
How to Study 1st Grade Spelling Words
