Word Finder

Pick a word length to start hunting for hidden words.

How to play this game

Word Finder is a classic word search built entirely from real spelling bee vocabulary. Pick a word length above — anywhere from 4 letters for younger spellers up to 10 letters for advanced competition words — and SpellingKids pulls 8 random words of that exact length from our word bank, hides them inside a 13x13 grid of letters, and fills every remaining square with random letters so the words don't jump out at a glance.

The 8 words are listed on the side of the grid, so you always know exactly what you're looking for — Word Finder tests visual recognition, not memory. Words can run left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, or diagonally in any of the four diagonal directions, so scan the whole board rather than just the rows and columns.

To select a word, click or tap its first letter and drag to its last letter — on a touchscreen, simply swipe your finger across the letters instead. Release, and if you traced a real word correctly, every letter in it lights up green on the grid and a check mark appears next to that word in the side list. Find all 8 words to finish the puzzle, then tap New Puzzle to shuffle a fresh grid with the same word length and play again.

Because every word comes straight from SpellingKids' spelling bee word bank, playing Word Finder builds the same skill spelling drills do — recognizing a word's exact letter sequence — but through visual scanning instead of typing or recall. That makes it a great warm-up or cool-down alongside Word Jumble and Word Trivia, and a low-pressure way to keep tricky words in view without the pressure of getting every letter right from memory.
