How SpellingKids collects, uses, and protects your information

Effective Date: April 1, 2026 ⚖️ Governing Law: India 📱 Applies to: Android App 🔄 Last Updated: April 1, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how SpellingKids ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and safeguards information when you download or use the SpellingKids Android application (the "App"). The App is designed to help students in Grades 3 through 9 prepare for spelling bee competitions using spaced-repetition flashcard technology.

By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall and discontinue use of the App immediately. If you are a parent or guardian downloading the App on behalf of a minor, you accept this Policy on the minor's behalf.

1
Information We Collect
Data Collection

SpellingKids is designed with a minimal data footprint. We collect only what is necessary to operate, maintain, and improve the App. The categories of information we may collect include:

  • Study Progress Data: Cards reviewed, swipe ratings (Easy / Hard), deck completion counts, and scheduled review intervals. This data is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.
  • App Settings: User-configured preferences such as new cards per day, total cards per day, and instruction page toggle. Stored locally on your device.
  • Device & Diagnostic Data: If the App crashes or encounters an error, anonymised diagnostic information (device model, Android OS version, error logs) may be collected automatically via Google Play's crash-reporting service to help us fix bugs.
  • Advertising Identifiers: If you have not opted out of personalised advertising, Google's advertising framework may collect the Android Advertising ID (GAID) to serve contextually relevant ads. See Section 4 for full details.

We do not collect: your name, email address, phone number, home address, payment information, photos, microphone recordings, contacts, location data, or any other personally identifiable information. No account registration is required to use the App.

2
How We Use Information
Data Use

Any information collected is used solely for the following purposes:

  • Powering the Spaced-Repetition Algorithm: Your swipe ratings and review history are used exclusively on-device to calculate the optimal next-review date for each flashcard, ensuring the App's core functionality works correctly.
  • Improving App Performance: Anonymised crash reports and diagnostic logs help us identify and fix technical issues, improve stability, and enhance the user experience in future updates.
  • Delivering Advertising: Advertising identifiers may be used by our third-party ad partners (see Section 4) to display ads within the App. Advertising revenue helps us keep the App free for all users.
  • Complying with Legal Obligations: We may use or retain information as required to comply with applicable law, respond to lawful government requests, or enforce our Terms of Use and Disclaimer.
ℹ️

We do not use your information to build personal profiles, sell data to third parties, target you with marketing communications, or share your usage data for any commercial purpose beyond what is described in this Policy.

3
Information Sharing & Disclosure
Third-Party Sharing

SpellingKids does not sell, rent, or trade any user data to third parties. We may share limited, anonymised information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service Providers: Trusted third-party vendors (such as Google Play Services and Firebase Crashlytics) who assist us in operating the App and analysing performance. These providers are contractually bound to use the data only for the purposes for which it was disclosed.
  • Ad Networks: Advertising partners such as Google AdMob may receive the Android Advertising ID and related signals to serve ads. These partners operate under their own privacy policies (see Section 4).
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required to do so by law, court order, or governmental authority, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of SpellingKids, its users, or the public.
  • Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or substantially all of our assets, user data may be transferred as part of that transaction. You will be notified via an in-app notice or App Store update description.
4
Advertising & Third-Party Services
Ads & SDKs

The App is free to download and use. To support ongoing development, the App may display third-party advertisements served by ad networks including, but not limited to, Google AdMob. These ad networks may use cookies, SDKs, and advertising identifiers to show ads that are relevant to your interests.

The information collected by ad networks is governed by their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review these policies:

  • Google AdMob / Google Ads: policies.google.com/privacy
  • Google Play Services: policies.google.com/privacy
⚠️

Opting out of personalised ads: You can limit ad personalisation on your Android device by going to Settings → Google → Ads → Opt out of Ads Personalisation. You may also reset your Android Advertising ID from the same menu. Note that opting out does not mean you will see fewer ads — ads will simply be less targeted.

🛡️

In compliance with Google Play's Families Policy, all ads displayed within the App are filtered for appropriateness and are not interest-based ads targeted at children under 13 years of age. Ad content is subject to Google's family-safe ad policies.

5
Children's Privacy
COPPA & DPDPA

SpellingKids is designed for students in Grades 3 through 9, which includes children under the age of 13. We take children's privacy seriously and comply with applicable child privacy laws, including the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDPA).

  • We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent.
  • The App does not require account creation, login, or submission of any personal details to use its core study features.
  • All ads shown to users identified or believed to be under 13 are delivered through Google's child-directed treatment setting, which disables interest-based advertising for those users.
  • No in-app purchases, social features, chat, or external communication tools are available within the App.
👨‍👩‍👧

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information without your consent, please contact us immediately at quizglobedevteam@gmail.com. We will promptly investigate and delete any such information from our records.

6
Data Retention
Storage & Deletion

All study progress, settings, and preferences generated by using SpellingKids are stored locally on your device. We do not maintain a cloud database of your personal study history.

  • On-Device Data: Retained for as long as the App is installed. Uninstalling the App will permanently delete all locally stored data. You may also clear the App's data at any time via Android Settings → Apps → SpellingKids → Clear Data.
  • Crash & Diagnostic Logs: Anonymised crash reports submitted to Firebase Crashlytics are retained for up to 90 days, after which they are automatically purged.
  • Advertising Data: Advertising identifiers are managed by Google and subject to Google's own data retention policies.
🗑️

Because we do not collect or store personal information on our servers, there is no centralised user account to delete. Uninstalling the App removes all App-associated data from your device entirely.

7
Data Security
Protection Measures

We take reasonable and industry-standard technical and organisational measures to protect any information processed by or through the App from unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

  • Study data is stored in Android's sandboxed internal storage, which is inaccessible to other apps without root access.
  • Any diagnostic data transmitted to Firebase Crashlytics is sent over encrypted HTTPS connections.
  • The App does not implement user authentication or cloud synchronisation, which substantially limits the attack surface for data breaches.
⚠️

No method of data storage or transmission over the internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your own device, including keeping your Android OS and the App updated to the latest versions.

8
Your Rights & Choices
User Control

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information. As SpellingKids stores data primarily on your own device and collects very limited data, many of these rights are exercisable directly by you:

  • Access & Portability: All your study data lives on your device. You can inspect it by navigating to the App's internal storage directory.
  • Deletion: Clear all App data at any time via Android Settings, or simply uninstall the App.
  • Opt Out of Personalised Advertising: Follow the steps in Section 4 to limit ad personalisation or reset your advertising ID.
  • Correction: If you believe inaccurate information about you has been collected (e.g., via a crash report), contact us at quizglobedevteam@gmail.com and we will investigate.
  • Withdrawal of Consent: You may withdraw consent to this Privacy Policy at any time by uninstalling the App.
🇮🇳

Users in India have additional rights under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDPA), including the right to access, correct, and erase personal data, and to nominate a representative to exercise these rights. Please contact us at quizglobedevteam@gmail.com to exercise any DPDPA rights.

9
Android Permissions We Request
App Permissions

SpellingKids requests only the minimum Android permissions required to deliver its core features. The table below explains each permission and why it is needed:

  • INTERNET: Required to load advertisements served by Google AdMob and to send anonymised crash reports. The App's educational content (word lists, flashcards) is bundled locally and does not require internet access.
  • READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE / WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android ≤ 9): Not requested. All data is written to internal app storage only.
  • TEXT_TO_SPEECH (implicit): The App uses Android's built-in Text-to-Speech engine to pronounce words aloud. No audio data is recorded or transmitted.
  • VIBRATE (optional): Used for subtle haptic feedback during swipe gestures. Can be disabled in Android Settings.
🔒

The App does not request access to your Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Location, Phone state, SMS, or any other sensitive Android permission.

10
Third-Party Links & Services
External Platforms

The App may contain links to external websites, app store pages, or third-party content (for example, links to our YouTube tutorial channel or the Google Play Store listing). These external destinations are governed by their own privacy policies.

SpellingKids has no control over and assumes no responsibility for the content, privacy practices, or security of any third-party websites or services linked from the App. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any third-party site you visit.

🔗

Clicking a link inside the App that opens an external browser or application means you are leaving the SpellingKids environment. Any information you provide to those third-party services is subject solely to their own terms and privacy policies, not ours.

11
Changes to This Privacy Policy
Policy Revisions

We reserve the right to update or revise this Privacy Policy at any time to reflect changes in applicable law, our data practices, or the App's features. Any material changes will be communicated through one or more of the following channels:

  • An in-app notification or banner displayed on the App's home screen.
  • An updated "What's New" description on the Google Play Store listing.
  • An updated "Last Updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy page.
📄

Your continued use of the App after any revised Privacy Policy is published constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. If you do not agree to the revised Policy, please uninstall the App. We strongly encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed of your rights.
