Everything you need to study smarter and ace your Spelling Bee

🧠

Spaced Repetition

The science behind smarter learning

Spaced Repetition is a scientifically proven learning method that shows you information at perfectly timed intervals — just before you're about to forget it. Instead of cramming all Spelling Bee words in one session, you review them across multiple days, which dramatically improves long-term memory.

How Your Brain Learns

Every time you successfully recall a word, that memory becomes stronger and lasts longer. If you find a word easy, the app waits longer before showing it again. If it's hard, you'll see it again sooner. This is the core idea behind spaced repetition.

Day 1 — First encounter You see a new word for the first time.
Day 2 — Hard review If you swiped left (Hard), the word comes back tomorrow.
Day 3 — Easy review If you swiped right (Easy), the word returns after 2 days.
Future days — Longer gaps As you master a word, the review interval keeps growing into weeks.
💡 Why it works: Research shows that reviewing material at spaced intervals is up to 5× more effective than re-reading or cramming. A little practice every day goes a long way!

What is a Flashcard?

Your digital study card for each word

A flashcard is a digital card that contains all the information you need to learn a spelling bee word. Each card has two sides — a front and a back.

I
Initial view of the Card (Clues)

Shows the IPA pronunciation (e.g., /kəˈtiːnə/), the part of speech (e.g., noun), the language of origin (e.g., Latin), and the meaning of the word. Try to recall the spelling from these clues before revealing the answer!

Flashcard front — shows IPA, meaning and origin
Flashcard back — shows the correct spelling

👆 Hover the card to flip it

F
Show word (Show spelling)

Reveals the correct spelling of the word. Press the Show word button to reveal the word when you're ready to check your answer.

Flashcard Decks

Your words, organised into manageable groups

A flashcard deck is a collection of related flashcards grouped together. The Spelling Kids app organises all spelling bee words into multiple decks — Spelling-001, Spelling-002, and so on.

Each deck shows you how many New Cards (words you haven't studied yet) and Due Cards (words scheduled for review today) are waiting for you. You can choose any deck to begin your study session.

Tip: Start with Spelling-001 and work through each deck in order. Focus on one deck per session to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

How to Use the App

Step-by-step study guide

1
Open the App & Tap "Start Studying"

From the home screen, tap the green Start Studying button to navigate to the deck selection page.

2
Select a Deck

Browse the list of decks (Spelling-001 through Spelling-007 and beyond). Tap any deck to begin. You'll see the number of new and due cards available for that day.

3
Read the Instruction Page

A brief instruction screen appears before your cards. It explains how swiping works. Once you're comfortable, you can disable this page in Settings.

4
Study Each Flashcard

Read the IPA, meaning, and origin on the card's front. Try to mentally spell the word. Press Pronounce to hear it, and Show word to reveal the spelling.

5
Swipe to Rate Yourself

After checking the spelling, swipe right if you knew it easily, or swipe left if you found it difficult. The app will schedule your next review automatically.

6
Come Back Daily

Return to the app every day to review your due cards. Consistency is the key — even 10–15 minutes a day will build a strong, lasting vocabulary.

🔘

Card Buttons

What the buttons on each card do

🔊
Pronounce Hear the word spoken aloud. Use this to match the sound to the spelling.
👁️
Show Word Reveals the correct spelling on the back of the card. Tap again to hide it.

Best practice: Always try to spell the word mentally before tapping Show word. Active recall — trying to remember before seeing the answer — significantly strengthens memory.

👆

Swiping the Cards

How to tell the app how well you know each word

After reviewing a card, swipe it to rate how well you know the spelling. The app uses your rating to schedule the next review at the perfect time.

👈

Swipe Left — Hard

You are not sure about the spelling or got it wrong. The app will show you this card again tomorrow so you can practice it sooner.

📅 Review: Tomorrow
👉

Swipe Right — Easy

You knew the spelling well! The app will schedule this card for review in 2 days, giving you time for other words.

📅 Review: In 2 days
💡

Be honest with yourself. If you even slightly hesitated, swipe left. The goal is genuine mastery, not rushing through cards. It's better to review a word one extra time than to forget it on the day of the competition.

Settings

Customise the app to fit your study schedule

Access the Settings page from the hamburger menu (☰) at the top right of the screen. Here you can control how many cards you study each day.

Study Tips for Success

Make the most of your practice time

Study Every Day

Even 10–15 minutes daily is more effective than a 2-hour session once a week. Spaced repetition only works when you return consistently.

Say It Out Loud

When a card appears, say the word aloud before pressing Pronounce. This trains your auditory memory alongside visual memory.

Learn the Origin

Many spelling bee words follow patterns from their language of origin (Latin, Greek, French). Understanding the origin helps you spell unfamiliar words by pattern recognition.

Don't Skip Due Cards

Due cards are scheduled for today because the algorithm predicts you're about to forget them. Skipping them breaks the spaced repetition cycle and reduces effectiveness.

Use the IPA

The IPA pronunciation guide shows you exactly how each sound in the word is made. Learning basic IPA can dramatically improve your ability to spell words you've only heard.
